Best place to see puffins on Iceland
About 24 km from Vatnajökull National Park, you will find the starting point for a puffin’s tour. The tour starts from the Ingólfshöfðin car park, about 5 km outside Hof. On the ring road, you will find a sign to Ingólfshöfði on the right side of the road.

The Puffin is a typical bird of the region. 60% of the world’s puffins can be found in Iceland. They breed on land, where they are born, as well. Then they live on the open sea. If you do not visit Drangey island (in the north of Iceland), then the Ingólfshöfði Puffin Tour is an ideal way to spot puffins.
First, you will drive about 25 minutes on the black sand beach in an open tractor cart to the nature reserve, followed by a 3km walk. Bring rain clothes if necessary. You can see and photograph puffins and other birds up close.
You will also learn about the history of the island and the birds. Ingólfshöfði is where Ingólfur Arnarson first set foot on Icelandic soil in 874 and started the colonization of the island. You’ll find a memorial stone to commemorate this event. The tour takes about 2.5 hours and the route is doable for everyone. From 1 June –15 August, tours depart at 10:15am and 1:30pm.
