Directions to Núpsstaður Turf chapel and Skeiðará Bridge Monument
Núpsstaður Turf chapel
At Núpsstaður, there are some remarkable old buildings that are supposed to be typical Icelandic farms in centuries past. Especially exceptional is the turf chapel, one of the few in Iceland, and most likely built in 1650. (Photo by: ActiveSteve)
Skeiðará Bridge Monument
In 1996, the Bárðarbunga erupted. This volcano is located under the Vatnajökull ice cap. A gigantic tidal wave destroyed a part of the longest bridge in Iceland (over 1 km long), the bridge that finally unlocked the ring road in 1974. Today you can see parts of the bridge, now regarded as monuments, by the side of the road.
