Snorkeling Silfra Fissure - Thingvellir National Park Iceland

Snorkelling Silfra Fissure in Thingvellir national park

Near the Þingvellir National Park, you will find the Silfra fissure, the natural division between the European and American continental plates. There, you can literally dive or snorkel between two continents.There is underwater visibility for up to 100 metres, which is very unique. This means that you can experience a feeling of vertigo whilst diving. The clarity of the water is partly due to the cold water (between 2° - 4° Celsius), coming from the nearby Langjökull glacier, and partly from the porous lava surface, which filters the glacial water. It takes 30 to 100 years before the water enters Lake Þingvellir. This natural filter provides the highest level of clarity. It’s safe to drink the water, before, after or even during your dive. You can book a snorkel or diving adventure at one of the various commercial businesses.

’s time to take the plunge and experience diving into Silfra’s pristine, crystal clear water. Filtered over decades by Iceland’s volcanic basaltic rock, you can easily take a sip during your dive; you won’t find purer drinking water. During your dive you will explore the four main parts of Silfra. You will float through Big Crack, Silfra’s narrowest section, where you can have your ‘Dive Between the Continents’ photo taken. As the fissure widens you will find yourself in the majestic Silfra Hall with the possibility of local geese and ducks paddling overhead. Near to the opening to Thingvallavatn we will enter the Silfra Cathedral;

  • Special places we would have missed otherwise ... We have just returned from a 16-day Iceland tour. The travel book was very helpful, we had downloaded and printed. The PDF travel guide helped us to find nice places. Very organized itinerary with a road map which listed all sites. TOP!
