Directions to Eiríksstaðir Viking Museum

In Eiríksstaðir, you can visit a replica of the house of Eiríkur Raudi (“Erik the Red” because of his hair colour) and his wife Þjóðhildur. Erik the Red supposedly founded according to the Icelandic stories the first Norse settlement in Greenland.
Eiríksstaðir is known as the place where his son Leifur Heppni Eriksson (“Leif the Lucky”, 980-1020) was born. Leif Erikson was the first European to set foot on the American continent, nearly 500 years before Columbus. You can find his statue in front of Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík. The statue was donated by the United States to Iceland in 1930 to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of the Icelandic Alþing.
